The Leopard Gecko is a nocturnal ground dwelling Gecko, they spend the day hidden under rocks or in dry burrows to escape the daytime heat and emerge at dusk to hunt insects, found in the deserts of Pakistan, Western India, and Afghanistan.
The Leopard Gecko scientific name Eublepharis macularius comes from Eu blephar (Referring to working eyelids) and macularius (meaning spotted).
The average size of an adult Leopard Gecko is 6-8 inches. Although In captivity, some have reached 9-11 inches.
Leopard Geckos are one of only a few gecko species that have eyelids. This helps the gecko keep its eyes clean and particle-free in its dusty environment (most geckos clean and moisten their eyes with their tongues). Many believe that this also gives the leopard gecko more personality, perhaps contributing to its popularity as a pet.
Like all geckos, they have the ability to shed their tail if frightened or disturbed in a process called caudal autotomy.
Leopard Geckos are carnivorous with their main diet consisting of a variety of insects.
The average life span of a Leopard Gecko is 19-22 years with the longest confirmed life span of 27 years.
They are relatively clean animals. The majority will define one area of their tank as the bathroom and only use that one area, making it easy to clean.
Leopard Geckos are among the easiest of lizards to maintain given the proper conditions. They rarely bite and tame easily. Leopard geckos that are handled regularly remainrelatively calm and are a good starter lizard.
The Leopard Gecko is not considered endangered in the wild and is thriving in private collections.
